Shortly after entry to the academy, students are divided into sets based on a variety of cognitive ability tests covering English, maths, and science and our knowledge of students’ individual abilities and needs.
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) A broad curriculum is taught which includes: English, mathematics, science, technology, computer science, history, geography, religious education, Spanish, physical education, art, music, and drama. In the spring term of Year 9, students will choose the subjects they wish to take at Key Stage 4.
- Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) A broad suite of subjects are offered. Students can choose from these subjects, in addition to continuing to study English, mathematics, science, and core physical education. Students are guided to choose subjects in which they have already shown good progress and to consider other subjects that are on first offer at Key Stage 4.
Our personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) programme supports the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students. The programme aims to develop students’ self-esteem and emotional and mental wellbeing through a focus on their personal development. The programme facilitates students’ understanding of positive relationships with themselves, their peers, and their wider community. Students are taught British values through our tutorial programme, incorporating external professional speakers, academy ethos, assemblies and our general high expectations of them.
At GCSE all students will study a range of academic subjects to allow them to achieve the full EBacc as we believe there are no limitations to success. These include:
- English (Literature and Language)
- Maths Foundation
- Maths Higher
- Science (Trilogy or Triple, depending on attainment)
- History or Geography
Alongside all of these EBacc qualifications, we also offer a wide range of subjects to allow students to follow their own strengths, passions and ambitions, some of these include:
- Sports’ Studies
- Arts (including photography, graphics, fine art and ceramics)
- Performing Arts
- Food and Nutrition
- Business Studies
- Child Learning and Development
- Religious Studies
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Computer Science

Modern Foreign Languages
At the Oldham Academy North, we nurture a culture of full inclusivity, supporting students with a wide range of needs. We have a particularly diverse learning community welcoming students of all abilities from many different backgrounds and cultures. Our students are encouraged and supported fully so that they leave ready to succeed in the challenging and competitive world around us.
Staff receive regular training in all areas of SEND so that they are able to adapt, scaffold and support all students effectively.
Effective assessment and provision for children with SEND or any other additional needs, will be secured in partnership with parent/carers, the young person, our academy network, the Local Authority, and any other appropriate external services. Working closely with a range of stakeholders, we support students, ensuring compliance with both the Equality Act 2010 and Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.
